Seasonal Maintenance Crew Leader

1. Job Overview

Operation of work vehicle with trailer and necessary equipment (must have current driver’s license), two years experience with operation of commercial vehicle and trailer required.

Professional landscape maintenance knowledge and know-how, two years of commercial experience required:
a. weed identification and removal techniques
b. shrub and tree identification and specific care
c. mechanical and hand edging of garden beds
d. pruning techniques for shrubs and trees
e. application of fertilizer/chemicals according to published rates and schedules, calibration of spreaders/sprayers, PPE and procedures for applicable chemicals and fertilizer
f. use of hand tools including rakes, shovels, brooms
g. operation of zero-turn riding mower, push mower, hand held/backpack blower, line trimmer, hedge trimmer
h. installation of perennials and shrubs
i. maintenance and troubleshooting of small power equipment
j. communication skills with employees, clients, and employers
k. enforcement of all safety procedures and protocol
l. management and supervision of employees

2. Employee Management

Safety procedures and employee training: ensure that employees you manage have been properly trained on all equipment used, as well as proper safety procedures and PPE (personal protective equipment) are used with all tools and equipment, enforcement of safety program at all times.

Sequencing of events: communication with employees in morning regarding day’s work, management of employees at job sites, delegation of labor duties, issuing time constraints to employees.

Efficiency: ensure that proper tools and equipment are used for all tasks by all employees, keeping employees on task, prevention of unnecessary use of labor hours.

Breaks and lunch: use best judgment when determining whether an additional break is needed when already traveling throughout the day.

Physical labor: crew leader must set the pace for the laborers, always leading a team-work type of environment.

Employee policy administration: enforcement of policies at all times to all employees, enforcement of safety program at all times, assistance with completion of accident reports

3. Daily Preparation Tasks

Morning/afternoon duties: daily preparation of all necessary materials, tools, equipment and vehicle; communication with owner/management regarding scheduling and sequencing of assigned jobs.

Job materials: management of fertilizers, chemicals and sprayers; cleaning and organizing as necessary, always have necessary materials in vehicle.

Other duties: vehicle and equipment maintenance – checking oil, greasing equipment, etc. on a biweekly basis or more if needed, fill tank with gas/fill equipment/mix gas at appropriate times, removal of garbage from vehicles on a daily basis, organization of shop tools, clean and sharpen tools/mower blades as necessary, general maintenance of power equipment/mowers on a weekly basis

4. Paperwork and Communication Requirements

Timecards: ensure the employees you manage have correct client name and times for individual jobs, ensure employees fill out time card on a daily basis, double check time cards for accuracy, ensure time cards are turned in every Friday.

Daily worksheets/work orders: complete paperwork on a daily basis; track labor hours and tasks completed, report job site safety concerns, note conversations with clients, note of individual issues that need addressing, track all materials used on each jobsite; paperwork to be turned in at the end of each work week.

Track labor hours: aim to finish job in the labor hours allotted, use of all labor hours allotted for each job is required.

Track broken tools: communication with management regarding broken tools and equipment, requests for tool replacements, and enforcement of proper use and maintenance of tools.

Communication with clients: discussion of work with clients as necessary, issue change orders with clients as necessary, all major issues shall be directed to upper management, portray professional attitude and demeanor at all times.

Miscellaneous duties: turn in all materials receipts with client name written on them, turn in gas receipts and log with your name, date and vehicle number written on them, read all assigned educational materials that are presented/available, continuing education and achievement of comprehensive knowledge of plant names, ecology and identification

5. Miscellaneous Notes

Hand tools: employees will receive one pair of hand pruners and one dagger. If lost, the employee will be required to pay for replacements (pruners $25.00, dagger $18.00), worn out tools will be replaced at no cost to employee.
